This is one of Rwanda’s most popular day hikes for good reason. After an early morning pickup from Kigali, we drive north through scenic countryside to Volcanoes National Park. The hike starts near Kinigi and takes you through bamboo forest, subalpine vegetation, and open slopes with sweeping views.
The ascent to the summit takes about 4 hours at a relaxed pace. For experienced hikers, it’s possible in 3. Along the way, your ranger guide will share insights about the park’s ecosystem, which is also home to gorillas and golden monkeys.
At the summit, you’ll reach Bisoke’s Crater Lake, a dramatic volcanic bowl filled with water and surrounded by mist. After a short rest and plenty of photos, we descend (about 2–3 hours), often through muddy trails, especially during the rainy season. We return to Kigali in the evening.
